  • ¼ cup water (for caramel)
  • ½ cup heavy cream (for caramel)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Add the wet ingredients: eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla, and mix until smooth.
  3. Carefully stir in the boiling water until combined.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into two greased round cake pans.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Once baked, cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. For the caramel sauce, combine 1 cup sugar and ¼ cup water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until golden.
  8. Gradually add ½ cup heavy cream while stirring, let cool slightly before using.
  9. To serve, layer the cake with caramel sauce and cover with chocolate frosting.
  10. Decorate with more caramel and chocolate shavings if desired.
